5 uses for Tarpaulins in the autumn

29th Oct 2024

Autumn is well and truly here, and that means that tarpaulins really start to come into their own. At Tarpaulins Direct we stock a wide range of tarps for any situation, so we thought we’d do a short blog post covering several ways you can use your tarpaulins for maximum effect in the cooler weather.

Protecting outdoor furniture

Outdoor furniture may be subject to rain, sleet, snow and more as the weather begins to turn, and this could mean that your summer chairs, tables and other furniture might be subject to moisture which may in turn cause them damage. Leaves also begin to fall off the trees in earnest around this time of year, which can cause further issues for furniture. With that in mind you can use a tarpaulin to cover your outdoor furniture, such as tables, chairs, and grills, to protect them from moisture and debris. This helps to extend the life of your furniture and makes it easier to store when winter arrives.

Leaf Collection

Autumn brings stunning foliage, but the beauty doesn’t last long once those leaves cover your lawn or those of your clients. Leaf collection can be a time-consuming chore, but a tarpaulin can simplify this process significantly. Spread a tarpaulin on the ground in the area where you’re raking leaves. Once you have a pile, simply gather the tarp and transport the leaves to your compost bin or disposal site.

This method is also excellent for gardeners and landscapers who have large areas to clean. A tarp allows you to collect a substantial number of leaves in one go, saving you multiple trips with a rake or leaf blower. You can also fold up the tarp with leaves inside, which makes it easier to carry and control, particularly when working alone.

Temporary outdoor shelter

Autumn weather can be unpredictable. A tarpaulin is an easy solution for creating a temporary shelter for instances of bad weather during outdoor gatherings, whether it’s a picnic, a bonfire, or a casual get-together. Tarpaulins are easy to set up and take down, making them ideal for situations where you need quick coverage. Covering Woodpiles

If you rely on a fireplace or wood stove to stay warm during the colder months, you likely have a wood pile that needs to be kept dry. Exposing your firewood to rain or snow can lead to rot, mould, and difficulties when trying to light a fire. A tarpaulin provides an effective cover for your pile, keeping the wood dry and ready to burn when you need it.

To cover your wood pile, choose a heavy-duty tarpaulin that’s large enough to wrap around the entire stack. Secure it reasonably tightly, allowing some air circulation to prevent moisture from getting trapped underneath. This setup will help keep your firewood in excellent condition.

Protecting Plants and Garden Beds

As autumn progresses, many plants in your garden may become vulnerable to frost and sudden drops in temperature. Tarpaulins are an affordable and effective way to protect delicate plants and garden beds from these harsh conditions. By draping a tarp over a simple frame or laying it directly on top of low-lying plants, you can create a barrier that helps retain warmth and shield your plants from frost damage.

With a range of sizes and styles, tarpaulins offer practical, versatile solutions for autumn’s challenges. At Tarpaulins Direct, we’re here to help you find the perfect tarp for your needs, ensuring that you’re prepared to tackle the changing weather with ease.
